My husband was inclined to go out on Saturday night and often stay out very late, which worried and upset me. One night, in light of what I had learned in Fascinating Womanhood, I did the following:
When he came in, looking sheepish, I just said to him, “I’ve decided you are an overgrown bully who gets his fun from picking on a little girl like me, and if I was big enough I’d punch you in the nose.”
Well, his reaction was something to see—first astonishment, then laughter. He put his arms around me and said, “Well, I guess I’ll have to start taking better care of you.” It was such a lovely feeling in contrast to what it might have been.
Another night when he was out late, the minute the door opened I ran to him and cried out my feelings like I had never dared before. I told him how long it seemed when he was away and how lonely and frightened I felt.
He held me and patted me and let me cry on his shoulder. It was good for both of us. The nights out now are almost a thing of the past.
